Vienna & Wine

In Vienna winemaking has a very long tradition. The Romans were already pressing grapes in the current city area. Today Vienna is the only capital city in the world to have vineyards that are significant in terms of area and economy.

The vineyards extend over 700 hectares and characterize the cityscape. Hiking trails, Heurigen and inns are embedded in this unique cultural landscape and form a versatile recreational area with the best view over the Danube.

White wines are produced from 80 percent of the vineyards. Delicious red wines are produced from 20 percent. The most frequently cultivated grape varieties are Grüner Veltliner, Rheinriesling, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and Welschriesling. In total the 400 wineries in Vienna produce around 20,000 hectoliters of wine.

The Viennese enjoy their wine best at the Heurigen. These are traditional wine taverns, which serve their own wine and tasty, mostly cold dishes.

Especially recommended: In the midst of the Viennese vines on the Nussberg, winegrowers serve wine and small dishes in huts. This atmosphere among the vineyards with a view of Vienna is unique and indispensable.
